And now for a few family photos to add to the album ? The first one is not a mystery.
It shows “Grandma Paling with Elsie and May“ (written on the reverse)
Elsie and May Paling were twin daughters of Arthur Edwin and Annie (nee Ebbern) .. they were born on August 24th 1916.
Grandma Paling would therefore be the mother of Arthur Edwin and thus the wife of coalminer Thomas of Cossall Village.
She was born Hannah Cook on August 20th 1856 at Little Hallam, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (nee Smith), and would be approximately 60 years old when the photo was taken.

These two are put together as the woman appears to be the same one ? The man is off to war ? …. or returned ?

This could be George Ebbern and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee George). They had two children, George William, born in 1915, and Frank Birch, born 1931. If the two photos show the two babies, then this might explain the difference in appearance of the mother .. an age gap of about 15 years ?

Let us concentrate on Photo 4f for a moment and introduce a little of the Ebbern family genealogical background.
Born in 1856, Annie Rebecca Ebbern was the youngest child of Francis and Marina (nee Burgin Richardson). This daughter married Samuel Robinson on July 13th, 1873, at St. Mary’s Church, Nottingham. Their youngest child was Lily May Robinson, born on April 28th, 1889. And in August, 1910 she married Bernard Whitman Maltby, son of George and Elizabeth Jane (nee Sudbury) of the Red House on Wharncliffe Road, in Ilkeston.
It may be that the three children in Photo 4f are the children of George and Elizabeth Jane Maltby …. Alice Mary born on June 30th, 1879, Margaret Edith born in 1881, and (possibly) Bernard Whitman born on December 26th, 1886.
